an optional aside

I added another blog, I am going to try and post information I have found, that is usefull/condensed at:

http://athmsvt-condensed.blogspot.com/

It is as much for myself as others, as it helps me find information that I know I have
read.

For this post I want to highlight two healthy recipes I tried and really liked.

MH June 2007, pg 78 Recipe: Jerk Pork Kebabs
12 oz pork tenderloin – 1” cubes
2 cups fresh pineapple
1 red pepper
1 large onion
½ cup Jerk Sauce – try Walkers Wood
4 skewers – soak'em

Use half of the sauce before putting on high heat grill. The rest when cooking at 4 minutes per side. Done when lightly charred and pork firm. Serve with sweet potato fries, 1 potato olive oil @ 450 for 20 minutes.

MH June 2007, pg 136 Fight fat with flavor
To many recipes to list. I should try more

Recipe: Spicy Garlic Shrimp
.25 Cups olive oil
4 cloves garlic
1lb peeled shrimp – salt/pepper to taste
1 Tbsp parsley 1 Tbsp Red Pepper flakes
Saute pan – heat oil to shimmer, add Pepper flakes /garlic. As garlic browns add shrimp for one minute, add parsley, cook one more minute. Serves well with a salad.

Again short as I work on posting more often.

Happy Hour - Take 1

I am going to keep the posts a little short for now till I start posting regularly.

Last Thursday me and Nat tried out Capitol City Brewery in Shirlington. It was not bad but only at the bar were appetizers half off. It was not until about 7pm that the crowd started to pick up, but it was about then we headed out. The crowd was a little older than us.

Today, we hit up the Union Station location of Capitol City Brewery and Tortilla Coast. It was an ok night. The Brewery was a little more chill, but had less of the singles bar scene going on.

Summary:
Shirlington - crowd did not come in till about 7pm and was slightly older
Capitol Hill/ Union Station - Younger crowd, but mix more cultured look than Tortilla Coast
Capitol City Brewery - Decent-ish? micro brew beer,
M-Tu 4-7 Half off Pints and App. AT BAR only

Tortilla Coast - Very young, slightly preppy but relaxed/changed into after work cloths crowd
5-Close
M - 2.50$ Miller Lite Bottles 5.99 Enchilada Plate
T - 2.50$ Bud/Lite, 50c Tacos
W - 2.50$ Miller Lite 10c wings
Tu - 3$ Corona/Lite
F - 3$ Tortilla Amber, $1 off Margerittas
S - 16$ pitchers of Margerittas
Nats games - 2.50 Bud/Lite

Finished the 10k

Ran the Xterra James River 10k scramble on Saturday. Finished in 73 minutes. Could have done better, but I ran the whole way and this should provide a starting place for the future. Though this week I am eating all I can and getting back to the gym some.

a bit late is better than never

I think that I have realized the one thing I need to be less tethered to a schedule, is a schedule. Without one it is just to hard to take care of the little things that add up. With one it seems that you can just get more accomplished so that when you want to be free from a schedule you can be. I guess it is a personal thing. Without one, I only get done what I have to.

Anyway, I took slight break in training for the 10k but am back on the bike. I have been doing alot of cardio at the gym on top of running. Though I am still barely at the 5 mile again. I am going to try for a 6 miler tomorrow. Hopefully being in Richmond should help some.

Anyway I will keep it short today, so that I might find an apartment.

Amazing run

Personal Best: ~5miles in 50:26. Combined my other two routes.

I felt amazing afterwards, and I managed to make it to gym after class.

Much to do, so I will keep this short.

On a side note I need to find someone to go with me to the Bradley Banquet on 4/20.

Good Run and Practice

I had a good practice in the rain at the IEEE/HKN softball practice yesterday.

Today I hit ~23:30 on the 3 hills route. I have inspiration depending on how tiring the softball game on Tuesday to combine my current two routes. If I do not do it on wed., I will definitely do it on Saturdays run.

I started a google spreadsheet for my times. Not the most accurate, but better than forgetting. It should help map progess too.

I am going to start posting stuff i read that I think is useful from magazines. In the future I might make that its own blog but for now I will start with this.

I did it.

Being a little hungover from a night of drinking, I was able to overcome and run for 20 min straight. Though not my best distance, it was a tougher router. Two big hills. Also it beat my run on wednesday but running after taking break.

On wed. I hit the 20min mark and stopped. I got to near food time. Today I thought I was goign to smash that time by a minute or two as I climbed the second hill, but it was not to be. I was a little defeated I only got about 5 seconds, but I felt alot better tackling the second hill. Not having made up much time I stopped. I did do two more sprints though to make up for it. It trimmed about 4-5 minutes of the total loop time for that route.

This entry is not that easist to follow, but I am trying to keep to the goal to enter blogs and just do it. With time hopefully I will get better.

It serves two fold. First I had the goal of just kind of keeping a track of where I have been, and where i want to go. It then gives me perspective to keep with my 10k training. I feel great after running today. The one area I didnt control this week was eating. I think by Tuesday I can try harder to eat better, but my OS projects and group meetings give away to much free food It makes it tough.

I am proud I got my run in, but think I could improve on my eating habits.

Getting closer

Tomorrow I am going to really try to stick to the routine.

Sat: I ran the kd5k in 32:30, though the first two miles was in 18min.
Sun: Softball 2.5 hours 4-6:30

Sun/Mon: Stuck doing my OS design milestone

Tues: Softball game at 7:30, same time as my tickets to Ben Folds, hopefully I do not miss to much of the concert.

That is all for the day.

3/22/2006 - - The beginning

The goal of this first blog is to create a commentary for whats going on in my life, and how I am going to try to accomplish more with my time. I will try to expand out, but no promises.

To start I am going to try to keep some goals for the week.

Major goal: Do something adventurous this week - get out, the 5k is a start but lets raise the bar
1st Minor goal - Use blog more often
2nd Minor goal - Keep to training schedule
3rd Minor goal - BK Project

I feel bad that this past week I have not kept to my training schedule, but the beginning of the week kept me busy with OS.

Yesterday was greatly needed. I awoke around 9/10 and heard the pitter-patter of rain on my window sill. I choose to go back to bed since not only was my only class canceled, but I wasnt about to leave my nice cozy bed to go run in the rain. So, my 5:30 meeting came around and I still didnt really feel like getting ready. I managed to change, as the gym shorts and IEEE t-shirt I wore the night before to the IEEE softball game were not goinig to cut it at a IEEE meeting. The promise of all you can eat ribs for 10$ was my motivation. A long Bday dinner for David with Micah and chris turned into the decision to hit up the Lyric to see the last king of Scotland.

Quote of the week: "I am giving up Christianity for lent." -random girl in my math class
Probably not orginial, but coming from that girl it might have been.
